The $25M Sports Betting Fraud Scheme

In May 2022, the US District Court for the Eastern District of NY indicted the professional poker player Cory Zeidman on federal charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, mail fraud, and wire fraud related to a “Sports betting fraud scheme” operated in Long Island and Florida. But what was the story, and what happened to Zeidman?

Zeidman and his co-conspirators were indicted for allegedly taking over $25 million from people who believed they had a sports betting organization that had access to inside information on fixed games for sports wagering. They have done that for 16 years. How did they do it? Cory and other co-conspirators placed deceitful radio advertisements claiming they have a white-collar approach to gathering critical confidential information on sports and sports betting using organization names, like Gordon Howard Global and Ray Palmer Group. Result? People would call them to get advice, then they request a fee to reveal the “privileged information” about fixed games that they claimed were received from physicians at colleges and television executives. But the whole thing was nothing but selling lies and misinformation!

According to the officials, many victims lost their life savings and ruined their financial lives. Zeidman was arrested in Boca Raton, Florida, on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.  Cory and his attorney, Morgan Zeidman, appeared before the court and pleaded not guilty to federal charges. If convicted, Cory must forfeit the money in more than a dozen bank accounts, plus his real estate properties in Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and New York.

Cory Zeidman has not been seen at poker tables and tournaments in 2023. It seems that the indictment has affected his professional poker career.

It has been two years since the indictment, and the case still needs to be resolved. According to the court records, Sarita Kedia is Cory’s attorney, and she has been discussing ongoing plea negotiations with Anthony Bagnuola, the assistant US attorney on the case.

End of An Era: Cory Zeidman Pleads Guilty To Defrauding Bettors

After a very long battle in court, finally, in December 4, 2024, the federal court in Central Islip, convicted Cory Zeidman of a crime. He was pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit mail and wire fraud in connection with a yearlong scheme to defraud prospective sports bettors in New York and Florida by claiming to have inside information on sporting events. The defendant, Cory Zeidman, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $3.6 million. He and his partners misled victims into believing they had inside information on sporting events and the final outcome of matches. The victims were required to pay exorbitant fees to obtain this supposedly privileged information, which was fictitious or based on the conspirators’ open-source internet research. Cory and his partners reaped millions in fees from victims over the course of over five years.

After the trial, NCPD Commissioner Ryder, stated that:

The guilty plea of defendant Cory Zeidman is a reminder that crimes against our residents will not go unpunished. Numerous victims lost millions of dollars after being given fraudulent and misleading information regarding online betting. We need to set an example and continue to investigate and arrest offenders who commit fraud and any other crimes against our residents. I would like to thank the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and Homeland Security Investigations for their assistance in this case.

The conviction has effectively ended Cory Zeidman’s professional poker and gambling career. He lost a massive amount of money, was sentenced to prison, and lost his popularity among fans and the poker community.
