A Quick Look At Ryder Cup Timeline

Ryder Cup Matches, 2023 Ryder Cup

The first Ryder Cup took place in 1927. The U.S. Ryder Cup Team chose to have only American players from the start. Most British teams were the same as in 1926, except for two players. The British team traveled on a ship for six days to get to the competition at Worcester Country Club. There were four team matches and eight individual matches. The United States team won the inaugural Ryder Cup in 1927, winning nine matches, losing two, and tying one, and a total score of 9.5 to 2.5.

The event used to take place every other year in odd-numbered years until 1999. But in 2001, it was canceled because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After that, it started happening every other year in even-numbered years, starting in 2002. However, in 2020, it was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It went back to happening every other year in odd-numbered years, starting in 2021.

The Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup (played every other year by non-European teams), and the Solheim Cup (played by women) are unique in professional sports. Even though these events generate a lot of money from TV, sponsorships, tickets, and merchandise, the players don’t receive any prize money. Because these events are known as Exhibition Events, meaning players compete for the honor of representing their country or continent.

The 2021 Ryder Cup happened in Haven, Wisconsin, from September 24 to 26. The US win in the event, 19 to 9, was the biggest in the event’s history since 1979.

How It Works: Ryder Cup Scoring, Captains, Team Selection, And More!

Format

The first two days have two sessions with four matches each. One session is fourball, and the other is foursomes. The last day has 12 singles matches. Let’s review each format in detail.

  • Four-Ball: In this format, a team is comprised of two players who each play their ball. The team’s score for each hole is determined by the lower of the two players’ scores. The winning team for a given hole is the one that records the lowest score. In the event of a tie, the hole is halved.
  • Singles: In singles, two golfers from opposing teams compete against each other, with the player with the lower score on each hole winning the hole. If the players’ scores are tied, the hole is halved. The match is won by the player who wins the most holes.
  • Foursomes: In the foursomes format, a team is comprised of two players who play a single ball together. The players alternate hitting the ball, with one player taking the tee shot on odd-numbered holes and the other player taking the tee shot on even-numbered holes. The team that achieves the lowest score on each hole is declared the winner of that hole. In the event of a tie, the hole will be halved.

Scoring

In the Ryder Cup, one match equals one point. If a match ends in a tie, both teams get half a point. The team that reaches 14 and a half points first wins the cup. If the score is tied at 14-14, the current cup holder keeps it.

  • Points: The event is a three-day, 28-match tournament between the US and Europe teams. Each match carries a value of one point, and no additional holes are played. If the two sides are tied after 18 holes, the match is halved, and each team earns half a point. The event’s winner will be the first team to get 14.5 points. If the matches are tied after 28 matches, the previous Ryder Cup winner retains the trophy.
  • Crowning The Champion: A team earning 14.5 points out of a possible 28 will be the Ryder Cup outright winner. In the event that both teams are tied at 14 points after the conclusion of all 28 matches, the previous Ryder Cup winner retains possession of the trophy.
  • Concession: In the context of match play, as opposed to stroke play, it is not mandatory for players to complete every hole. In the event that a player concedes a stroke to their rival, the latter may pick up their ball and takes the score they would have made on the next stroke. It is because the goal of matchplay is to win holes, not to have the lowest score overall.

Team Selection

The U.S. Ryder Cup team will comprise the top six players in the points rankings(you can check the official website for updated players ranking), plus six captain’s picks. Meanwhile, the top three players from the European Points List, the top three players from the World Points List, and six captain’s picks will make up the Europe team.

Team US VS Team Europe Captains

Zach Johnson, the 2023 Ryder Cup captain for Team USA, has a wealth of experience in the event. He played in five Ryder Cups from 2006 to 2016 and compiled an overall record of 8-7-2. In singles matches, he was even better, going 3-1-1. Johnson also served as an assistant captain for the U.S. team in the 2018 and 2021 Ryder Cups.

Luke Donald, the captain of Team Europe for the 2023 Ryder Cup, is a proven winner having an impressive record-breaking performance as a player with 10 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie in his Ryder Cup resume. Luke played in four Ryder Cups with his team winning all four of those events. He also served as vice-captain on the two previous European teams.

US Or Europe: Who Is Favored To Win The 2023 Ryder Cup?

As history suggests, the US team is favored to be crowned the champion this year. According to the top online bookmakers, like Betonline, the US is the favorite with -170 odds. The Europe team is the underdog with odds of +190, and the match is very unlikely to end in a tie with odds of +1200. If you back the team US, you should wager $170 to win $100 and gain a net profit of $270. On the other hand, wagering on the Europe team requires you to bet $100 to win $190 and gain a net profit of $290. Betting on the tie option offers a whopping payout as it is a long shot bet, meaning wagering $100 will give you $1200. Still, the outcome is extremely unlikely to happen.

Besides outright winner(futures), top sportsbooks also offer player props, in-play, and parlay lines to spice things up. If you are new to sports betting, check out our step-by-step Golf Betting Guide to learn the ins and outs of betting on the sport.

Wrap Up

The 2023 Ryder Cup is shaping up to be an exciting event, with both teams fielding strong lineups. Zach Johnson and Luke Donald are both proven winners and will be looking to lead their teams to victory. With some serious talent on both sides of the pond, the course at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club will be a battle to remember!
