NFL matches are the most popular sporting events across the United States. So, this is not strange to see that the NFL playoff championship or Super Bowl attracts thousands of audiences and bettors. Super Bowl alone has the largest share of the sports betting market. Did you know that Super Bowl is the third biggest sporting event on the planet?! Now you know!

It is good to mention that people have wagered around $180 million on Super Bowl LVI at Nevada sportsbooks. Now, if you are wondering how much money is bet on Super Bowl annually, I can sum it up in one word: A LOT!

Believe it or not, the sports betting market is a billion-dollar market(even more!) that grows so fast. For this reason, more US states are legalizing sports betting, especially betting on Super Bowl.

So, I want to teach you how to make money from your favorite teams. Keep reading to learn everything about Super Bowl Betting.

A Quick Flashback

Bet On Super Bowl

As mentioned earlier, Super Bowl is the playoff championship game of the NFL or National Football League of US Professional Gridiron Football. The game is between the winners of the American Football Conference(AFC) and National Football Conference(NFC) leagues, where the final winner will be crowned as Super Bowl Champ. Every year a different city will host the Super Bowl in January or February.

In 1966, the NFL and AFL agreed to merge to have one national football league. They agreed to have an end-of-season championship. The new league was divided into two conferences- AFC and NFC. But the new league did not begin until 1970.

Where does the name come from? Well, from college! For years the word bowl was used to describe the college’s annual championship games. So, a super league required a super bowl! On 15th January 1967, the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs went head to head for the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game now known as Super Bowl I. The name was officially used for the first time in 1917 for Super Bowl IV. Roman numerals are used to designate the individual Super Bowl games because Super Bowl is played in the year following a chronologically recorded season.

Super Bowl Sunday-the day of the game- is considered an unofficial American holiday and people across the country make a party at homes, restaurants, diners, and literally everywhere. Again, did you know that Americans eat more food on Super Bowl day than any other day of the year except Thanksgiving? With the halftime entertainment provided by celebrities like Beyonce, Micheal Jackson, Shakira, JLO, and others,  millions of eyes are guaranteed to watch every Super Bowl game. Even people who don’t give a damn about football!

Starting in 2022, Super Bowl is played on the second Sunday in February, and the winner will take the Vince Lombardi Trophy home. It is named after the coach who won the first two Super Bowls.

Super Bowl Betting: Legal Or Illegal?

Super Bowl Betting: Legal Or Illegal

As I said, this is a big day for Americans. So, it doesn’t make sense for officials to ban one of the most fun parts of this day-betting. As long as you wager at an authorized state-regulated sportsbook like Betonline or a legitimate offshore one, it is legal to bet on the Super Bowl odds.

No federal law prohibits placing bets through authorized domestic or online sportsbooks. However, Washington state gambling laws forbid players to participate in online gambling unless the activity is precisely authorized by the state law. But the good news is that many of our recommended sportsbook sites welcome bettors from Washington state. The other good news is that the act of placing a bet on the Super Bowl is not considered illegal in the United States.

Recently, more states have taken legal sports wagers on the Super Bowl than ever. In addition to gambling on the Super Bowl in Nevada, Super Bowl betting is legal in the following US states:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

How To Find The Best Super Bowl Betting Sites?

Although you can find the best sportsbook in this article, if you want to choose a gambling platform, you must consider the following points:

Legality

Whenever you want to choose a Super Bowl betting site to sign-up with, just go for the licensed and regulated one.

Only in 18 US states live sports betting is available. In some of these 18 states, only a handful of Super Bowl betting sites are available.

Remember to check the list of available states for Super Bowl betting on the sportsbook site and app before depositing your money.

Sign-Up Offers

Always take advantage of the free stuff sportsbooks offer. Especially when it comes to the Super Bowl, cash in on the sign-up offers, like free bets and deposit matches. The good news is that you can find great welcome and sign-up bonuses at our recommended sites, where you can get the most value out of your money while betting on the big game.

Market Variety

Luckily, I have listed the best Super Bowl betting sites that offer an extensive selection of betting markets for the big game. This gives you hundreds of Super Bowl betting options.

Typically, all SB betting sites offer the usual spread, totals, and Moneyline markets, with many game and player props available to bet on. Some betting sites offer even more fun prop bet options like the result of the coin toss as well as fun markets related to the half-time show.

In-Play Betting Options

If you are a sports betting fan, you already know how fun it is to place live bets. Now, imagine the extent of excitement when it comes to Super Bowl in-play betting.

For a site to make it to the top-SB betting sites, it must offer an extensive selection of live betting markets. Also, the live betting section on the site must be user-friendly, easy to navigate, and fast loading because markets and odds change at any second.

Bet On Super Bowl Online Explained

Sportsbooks release their odds once the SB matchup is official.

This section is intended for readers who are relatively new to sports betting. I will not bore you with some technical terminology or analysis. I want you to be well educated and prepared to have some fun and be responsible for your betting on Super Bowl Sunday. I will make it easy and understandable, but pro bettors will equally benefit from the tips and tricks.

So, let us get to it:

Super Bowl Moneyline

This year, we have Los Angeles Rams VS Cincinnati Bengals. The first betting option I am going to cover is the money line. This is the most basic type of wager. You are simply backing the winner. In other words, you will decide who will win the SB.

Money Line
Los Angeles Rams -198
Cincinnati Bengals +166

Now, let’s see what these numbers mean.

If you think LA Rams will win, you will bet on their money line. The minus sign means they are the favorite- they are expected to win- and you should risk that amount of money to get a 100 dollars profit. Simply, you should place $198 to get a $100 profit. This is not a great return but this is the case with backing the favorite.

On the other hand, the Bengals are the underdogs- not expected to win-. In this case, you should risk $100 to receive a $166 profit. This sounds juicy. But this is the sportsbooks trick to entice you to bet on the underdogs by giving you a larger profit.

So, in a nutshell, when you bet the money line, you are picking the winner. The favorite pays less favorable profit while the underdog pays out a bigger return.

Super Bowl Point Spread

Spread bets are the second most common type of wagers. Spreads are quite common during the regular season, postseason, and every Super Bowl game. In this scenario, you don’t choose the winner. Instead, you are choosing by how much the winner will win the game.

Spread Odds
Los Angeles Rams -4-112
Cincinnati Bengals +4-108

The minus sign for the LA Rams means that not only they should win, but they should win by more than four for you to win the wager. So, in this case, if you think the Los Angles Rams will win by more than four, you should risk $112 to get a $100 profit.

On the other hand, the plus sign for the underdogs-Bengals- is the interesting difference between the money line and spread bets. Here, the Bengals can lose, but as long as they do not lose by more than four, your bet wins. In this scenario, you risk $108 to get a $100 profit if they do not lose by more than four.

Now, what happens if the Rams win by exactly four? This is called a Push. In this scenario, neither bet wins or loses, and your wager will be refunded.

Super Bowl Totals (OVER/UNDER)

In this type of betting, you are trying to predict the game’s total score. In other words, will the total score of the game go over or under the number you are seeing in the total section of the table?

TotalOdds
Los Angeles Rams O 48.5-110
Cincinnati Bengals U 48.5-110

Here, you have to take a side, over 48.5 or under 48.5? In either scenario, the odds are -110. This means you have to risk $110 to receive a profit of $100. For example, if you take Over and the LA Rams score 50 something, you win, but if they score 30 something, you lose. The same thing is true for the Under side.

In a nutshell, when you bet on totals, it does not matter who wins the game but what matters is correctly anticipating the over or under of the number of points scored.

Super Bowl Props Bets

The most common type of prop bets is player prop bets. In this case, you are betting on a particular player’s statistics throughout a game or a certain action that the player will or will not do. Let’s go over the following example together:

Receiving Props: Player Receiving Yards
OverUnder
Tyler Boyd39.5

-114

39.5

-114

Ja’Marr Chase 78.5

-114

78.5

-114

Cooper Kup104.5

-114

104.5

-114

Van Jefferson34.5

-114

34.5

-114

In this type of bet, you are trying to predict the total receiving yards that receivers will get during this SB game. For example, you want to take the LA Rams wide receiving stud- Cooper Kup. According to his line, you can bet either on Kup receiving over 104.5 yards or under 104.5 yards during the game. In either scenario, you should risk $114 to receive a $100 profit.

Now, there is another popular type of props bet where you bet on whether something will happen or not. One of the most popular ones is touchdown props. For example:

Any Time Touchdown Scorer
Cooper Kup-190
Cam Akers-120
Tyler Boyd+190

In this type of props, you are trying to predict who will score a touchdown during this game. Here again, the minus sign indicates that these are the most likely touchdown scorers with less profitable odds. On the flip side, the plus symbol represents the less likely touchdown scorers with higher profitable odds.

From the table above, if you back Kup, you should risk $190 to receive a $100 profit. Conversely, if you take Tyler Boyd who is very unlikely to score a touchdown, you will risk $100 to get a $190 profit. Remember touchdowns are very risky props bets because they are entirely unpredictable. Also, there are tons of different props and specialty props to bet on but the concept of reading the odds is pretty much the same.

Super Bowl Parlays

Parlay means bundling several wagers on a single ticket. For instance, you can take the UNDER and couple it with a few specialty props. But there is an important point to remember about parlays. To win the entire Parlay bet, each separate wager must hit. Otherwise, your entire slip is considered a loss.

Parlays are fun because they are not limited to the Super Bowl. While making your SB parlays, you can add other sporting events that are happening at the same to your ticket.

Super Bowl In-play Bets

In-play bets allow you to place your wagers during game time. Sportsbooks update live odds during and throughout each drive and this allows you to anticipate whether it will end in a touchdown, interception, or field goal. Remember that you do not have much time to make up your mind about a live bet because in-play odds disappear quickly and you should be as quick to place your wager. Among live betting options, there are in-game player props like which player is going to score the next touchdown. Live betting options double the SB excitement.

NFL Futures

As the name suggests, you can wager on Super Bowl 57 while SB 56 is being played. To make a futures bet, you should predict which team will win the next year’s Super Bowl. The only downside to this bet is that you will not get the outcome of your bet until next year.

Super Bowl Betting In California

At the time of writing this article, sportsbooks cannot operate inside the California state as it is illegal. However, if you live there, it is completely legal to sign up and wager at a licensed offshore betting site or sites operating in other states. Bovada is licensed and regulated in Panama but accepts players from the majority of US states including California. Other trusted sites for US players are:

  • Betonline
  • BetMGM
  • FanDuel Sportsbook

However, the point is to have fun. If you want to take it more seriously, there is more to learn. In fact, always there is something new to learn about gambling. You have a long way to go before you can call yourself a pro sports bettor. Start by learning and never give up on that.
